Alternative light sources part III

Today the third setup from the workshop “alternative light sources”.
For this setup Nadine used one light on her head, because this light was not bright enough to light her whole face I used a Westcott Ice Light to light part of her face and body, I used the barn doors on the ice light to really steer the light where I wanted it. A good assistent is vital for these kind of setups.

This is a shot with just the ice light.

Alternative light sources part II

Today we look at the second set from the workshop “Alternative light sources”.
Again with our model/stylist Nadine.

In this setup Nadine went all out with her creation and it was 100% fitting the idea I had to combine a single lightbulb with her “outfit”.
She’s holding lamps that are actually are connected to the power and emit light. Of course this light is much lower in intensity than the bare lightbulb so a bit of precaution has to be taken with the distance of the bare light bulb and Nadine, the distance couldn’t be too much because then the light fall off would have been less interesting.

Also here I shot on AV mode with a fixed minimum shutter speed and autoISO.
Thanks to the EVF in the Sony you can pretty much see the end result on the fly.

Alternative light sources part I

One of the things a lot of people associate with model photography is strobes, speed lights, studio, battery powered etc.
During one of my workshops called “Alternative light sources” we also look at the more “alternative” light sources and how to combine them. The following blogposts will be about these “alternative” light sources and I’ll give you some tips and share some of the images we shot during that workshop with Nadine.

Today we look at using Led panels as the main light source (and only one in this case). For this series I used the LedGo panels.
Of course you can mount them on a stand and use them as normal strobes, but it’s much more fun (and interesting) to let the model play with the panels, this way you can include the panels in the shot, but also get unique looking images.

Settings on the camera were :
AVmodel, AutoISO and a min shutter speed (of where you feel comfortable).
Normally I always use a light meter but for these shots that’s pretty much useless because the model keeps changing the distance and position of the light source, this is why it’s great to have the EVF with setting effect from the Sony which gives me a WYSIWYG effect (What You See Is What You Get). If you don’t use a camera with that option you can always use the backLCD of course. With EV control (Exposure Compensation) you can change the look of the shot and see exactly the end result.
Here are the results.

Watsonville (Santa Cruz USA) here we come for an intense workshop

On July 15th we will be in Watsonville, Santa Cruz USA for an intense small group workshop with our friends from Rogue.

This will be a jam-packed day with loads of information on using small flash on location, both inside and outside.
Due to the small group there is a lot of time for questions and interaction, and of course you also get to shoot yourself. Although the gear used that day will be speed lights, the techniques are of course also valid for ANY other kind of light. If you want to learn more about model photography and working with the models, workflow, maximizing locations etc….. this is THE workshop for you.
