Depends on how you see it.
Sony is my main camera for the DSLR work and workshops at the moment.

I still shoot a lot with the FujiFilm cameras on travels, street etc. Nothing beats these cameras, they are AWESOME.

And I use MF (Leaf Credo60) for all my commercial work and some demos.

Hi Frank. I been following your blog and now I am a A99 user. It’s a great camera. But I run into this issue during a studio shoot. I had my camera in ISO100 F11 1/125 and I can’t see my view finder. What to do in this situation? I am pretty sure there is a setting but I just can’t find it.

Thanks for reply Frank, much appreciated….. after waiting for nearly 2 weeks for response from several requests from Sony uk ive come to the conclusion that they are very un prepared to enter the world of supplying pro products to pro photographers, their support is diabolical if non existent, it was a simple request to advise on the pro support network that is offered in the UK, the info i have managed to get is there isnt any, not sure how it is elsewhere in the world but they need to look at how Olympus have altered there outlook and support system as this is now 1st class, if you read franks blog Sony… get your house in order if you want to compete with the big boys, when you do i may invest in your kit

Hello Frank, i had originally heard about DNA from you. I bought it to use with my Sony A7r but it is a disaster.

The software keeps dropping my images. I am so frustrated. You know we as photographer we so hard to get that right expression and with DNA I am losing so many images.

It either does not bring the image in or it stops working all together.

I have emailed DNA software several times and they never respond. In my opinion they are a terrible example of a company that does not take care of their clients nor do they back up their software (product). Are you familiar with this problem and if so is there a solution to repair the problem that you know of?

    Thank you,

      Hi,
I have mostly positive experiences with them.
An alternative that is “rock solid” is using the Sony remote software and Capture One.
Lightroom is a bit “flacky” with dropping connections, so it might not be a problem from DNA.

I know Lr sometimes drops the connection but that’s not a problem only with Sony.
It’s weird they don’t email back, normally they mail pretty fast.

Sorry for the very late reply, I missed a few comments I now see.

    Hi Frank,
I saw your video of the x-rite MacPhun webinar. In this you captured the color checker with the Capture One software. What me confuses: There is no possibility to write any profile that you can import to Capture One and to correct the colors … O do you have a special trick or any workaround?

With kind regards from the canaries,

    Uwe

I wish they would support it indeed.
I shoot it because my workflow is heavily based on Lightroom, I do RAW conversions, tethering etc. in Capture One or DxO.
When I need more accurate colors than the profiles in Capture One (which are pretty good) then I will use the Colorchecker Passport in Lightroom or DxO, So I will always shoot it.

    • Frank Doorhof
      Frank Doorhof says:

Indeed, I hope they will add this soon.
I shoot it because my workflow is a mix between Lr and Capture One and DxO so if I need it at least I have it.

      Hello Frank,
Regarding Uwe’s comment, I have wanted to see Capture One and DXO integrate functionality of the X-Rite Colour Checker Passport into their software for two years now. As a matter of fact, I have emailed X-Rite and Capture One (Phase One) a few times asking about this very issue, but have not received a response from either of them. I even spoke with the local Phase One representative, but that was not beneficial either.

I can’t imagine a downside or conflict of interest for Capture One and DXO in adding Colour Checker Passport functionality to their products. On the contrary, I think it would attract many photographers that use it to purchase their products. If heavy hitters like you and Uwe, if this is Uwe Steinmueller, the coauthor of The Digital Photography Workbook (Wonderful book) got involved, maybe Capture One, X-Rite, and DXO would be more receptive to the possibility of making this happen.

Trust me, I’ve been pushing this for a LONG time.. but somehow it doesn’t seem to register, and I know a lot of people want this, but if it doesn’t hit them as being important they won’t add it, I know they promise to look into it for a while so I still have my hopes up.

In all honesty the profiles from Capture One and DxO are very very good but I want to have to option to create my own like in Lr with the Color checker passport like you do.

I keep pushing it every time I see them 😀

Frank, so far there is me. Pittsburgh has old and new architecture, lots of “street places” and alleys, rivers, inclines, hills, mountains, etc. Lots of old architecture. Lots of places to set up shop for a workshop near the Pittsburgh International Airport as many people come here for seminars to the Pittsburgh area. Pittsburgh is home to many corporate headquarters. While you are here, you can visit the Andy Warhol museum. Best time to visit is in the spring, somewhere after April. Please consider Pittsburgh as it is one of the best rated cities in the US to live, visit and tour for it’s diverse culture. Not as many flashy lights as Las Vegas or as busy as Boston, but the people here are really nice and would certainly welcome you.

As soon as we would have someone on the location to help arrange everything we can always discuss it.
For the moment we are planning NY for end of the year.
