An abandoned building

As you could have read in a previous blog post I always carry my camera with me, you never know what you encounter and can shoot. After we visited the store for the mannequins we passed a very nice abandoned building. In the Netherlands we don’t have a lot of those and somehow these buildings always have a incredibly pull on me. The whole building was locked off with fences, but my intern Sharon saw a small path leading towards the entrance, almost too good to be true…

Normally one would say, just go and enter the building, however in this case we had to cross several companies. I decided to not take any risk and just ask someone if they knew the owner. Much to my surprise the first person I asked (an older gentleman) was the owner of the building. I explained I was a photographer and I just love this kind of buildings, at first he was clearly not thinking about allowing me to go there “it’s very dangerous”, “what would you possible want to look for” but when I said I did this kind of shoots many times before and I always came home save (with a big smile) and we would not destroy anything (also with a big smile) he looked at me and Sharon from top to bottom (I think he looked a bit longer at Sharon to be honest) and said “Well ok, as long as you’re careful”.

Although I normally always have a tripod with me, this time I did not. We did some filming the day before and I forgot to put my “travel”pod back in the car, so all the images you see here are actually HDRs shot handheld with the 5DMKII and converted with NIK HDReFexPro which I really love for work like this. It does a great job (and quick).

Very nice. We have an abandoned power station that we can sometimes get into depending on who has knocked over the fence. There’s a sizable fine for any caught in it but I haven’t heard of anyone actually getting one. It’s always full of photographers. I’ve been in it once and we are planning another trip there at the moment.

Heres a few from when I was there last.

Cheers Frank. If you find yourself in Perth, Australia one day I’ll take you on a tour of the place. It’s actually very big and there is a second building that I have only seen a few of the rooms, but it allows you to go upstairs into the second level. The stair case is actually pretty grand for a power station and in its day with out all of the graffiti I think it would have been an amazing sight to see.
